Berlin Wall dedication set for Nov. 10
A segment of
the Berlin Wall on the Rice University campus will be dedicated
at 10 a.m. Friday outside James A. Baker III Hall.
After the dedication,
Rice President Malcolm Gillis, former secretary of state
James A. Baker III and Juergen Chrobog, ambassador of the
Federal Republic of Germany to the United States, will speak
in the Baker Hall Commons. Academicians from Rice and the
University of Houston will participate in a panel discussion
on The Consequences of the Fall of the Berlin Wall at 11 a.m.
The Berlin Wall
separated the world of oppression from the world of freedom
from 1961 to 1989. The people of East and West Germany took
down the wall Nov. 10, 1989. The ceremony at Rice commemorates
the 11th anniversary of this historic event.
The Berlin Wall
Monument at Rice was made available by Browning-Ferris Industries
at the request of Mary McIntire, dean of the School of Continuing
Studies at Rice. The monument recently was relocated next
to Baker Hall. The James A. Baker III Institute for Public
Policy is hosting the event.
