Martel calls for play submissions

Martel calls for play submissions

The Martel College
is calling for submissions for its first theatrical production, “Martel Take 10,” to be staged April 19-22 in
Farnsworth Pavilion. The production will be a collection
of six student-written plays chosen at the end of this semester.

Fourteen students
who submit plays will have the opportunity to take the college
course “MART 310, Playwriting Master Class.” Class
members will be among those involved with the “Martel
Take 10” production in the spring. These students will
have the opportunity to revise their works with the critique
of theater experts and professionals from Rice, the University
of Houston and the Houston professional communities. Among
the expected instructors are Mark Ramont, director, Rice
Players; Trish Rigdon, associate director, Rice Players;
Douglas Mitchell, adjunct professor in linguistics; Michael
Carroll, playwright and the Burton J. and Ann M. McMurtry
Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics; Sidney
Berger, director of the theater program at the University
of Houston; Travis Mader, dramaturge at the Alley Theater;
and Rob Bundy, artistic director of Stages Repertory Theater.

The project
is being run independently from, but with the support of,
the Martel College Founding Committee. Financial support
for the production is being provided through a Bill Wilson
Grant from Wiess College and an Envision Grant from Leadership
Rice. Funding for the master class will be provided through
the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.

The goals of
the project are threefold: to encourage students to write
plays and give them an opportunity to have them produced;
to provide students who may not have time to be involved
in a full production the opportunity to work on a shorter
piece of theater; and to help Martel College build an identity
as a community through college theater.

All students
are encouraged to submit 10-minute plays to be performed,
and those students whose works are chosen to be performed
must be available to take the master class next semester.
Deadline for submissions is Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. Playwrights
will be notified Dec. 8 if their plays will be performed.
Submissions and questions should be directed to Victoria
Zyp, Wiess College, at <pryncess@rice.edu>.
