Franz
Brotzen,
the Stanley C. Moore Professor Emeritus of Materials Science,
was the recipient of a special citizenship award from the
city of Teofilo Otoni in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil,
Sept. 7. Mayor Edson Soares of Teofilo Otoni presented the
award at a ceremony that honored Brotzen for his longtime
association with the city, its scientific and educational
community and his generosity to health care institutions.
Marcia Citron,
the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Distinguished Service
Professor of Musicology, was the keynote speaker for the
music and culture plenary session of the Nordic Musicological
Congress, U. of Aarhus, Denmark, Aug. 28. She delivered
a paper titled The Elusive Voice: Absence and Presence
in Jean-Pierre Ponnelles Film Le Nozze di Figaro
at the interdisciplinary symposium In and Out of Opera:
A Conference on the Media and Spaces of the Operatic
at the U. of Santa Cruz, Oct. 28. Recent publications include
a reprint edition from U. of Illinois Press of her 1992
book Gender and the Musical Canon and the essay
Gendered Sonata Form: Toward a Feminist Critical Tradition
in Frauen und Männerbilder in der Musik: Festschrift
fur Eva Rieger, published by BISVerlag in Oldenburg,
Germany.
June Ferrill,
instructor, Cain Project, School of Social Sciences, recently
presented Innovative Ways for Students to Connect
with the Business World, Their Peers and Other Disciplines
at the Association of Business Communications annual
convention.
Angelo Miele, the Foyt Family Professor Emeritus in Mechanical
Engineering, Materials Science and Computational and Applied
Mathematics, lectured on The Flight from Earth to
Mars and Back at the Blue Bird Circle of Houston,
Nov. 1.
Leslie Miller,
senior research scholar, Center for Technology in Teaching
and Learning, participated in a National Endowment for the
Humanities panel at the recent meeting of the Oral History
and Changing Communities. The presentation described the
World War II oral histories collected in conjunction with
Hogg Middle School students and published on the Internet.
Ewa M. Thompson,
professor of Slavic studies, has had her book, Imperial
Knowledge: Russian Literature and Colonialism (March
2000), appear in Polish translation in October. It was translated
by Anna Sierszulska and was published by Universitas Press
in Krakow, Poland, under the title Trubadurzy Imperium:
Literatura Rosyjska I Kolonializm.

Weisman, professor, Dept. of Chemistry, presented an
invited seminar titled Photophysics of Fullerenes to the Dept. of Chemistry of Yale U., Oct. 17.
Boris I.
Yakobson, associate professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science, presented an invited paper titled
Mechanics in Fullerene Nanotubes at the International
Union of Materials Research Societies in Hong Kong July
21. He gave two seminars: Physics of Structural Relaxation
in Nanoscale at Shinshu U. and at NEC Corp. Research
Center, Tokyo, July 25. He gave an invited lecture at the
Workshop Nanostructures 2000 in Cagliary, Italy, Oct. 4.
On Nov. 6, Yakobson gave an invited paper titled Atomistic
Modeling of Advanced Fibers at the 2000 American Society
of Mechanical Engineers International Mechanical Engineering
Congress in Orlando, Fla.
