Michael Barlow,
assistant professor, Dept. of Linguistics, presented a paper
titled “Designing a Parallel Concordancer” Nov.
4 at the CULT2000 (Corpus Use and Learning To Translate)
Conference held in Bertinoro, Italy.

Janet Braam,
associate professor, Dept. of Biochemistry & Cell Biology,
was an invited speaker at the U. of Tennessee, Knoxville,
Botany Department Seminar Series Sept. 25. She spoke on
“Molecular Responses to Environmental Stimuli: Regulation
and Functions of the Arabidopsis Touch Response Genes.”
Braam attended the 16th annual meeting of the American Society
for Gravitational and Space Biology Oct. 25-28 in Montreal
and served on its governing board. Braam was an invited
speaker at the Leopoldina Symposium “Plant Molecular
Biology–Current Aspects” Nov. 3-5 in Halle, Germany,
where she spoke on “Regulation and Functions of the
Mechano-sensitive TCH Genes of Arabidopsis.”

John Bryant,
the Henry S. Fox Sr. Professor of Economics and professor
of management, presented “Trade, Credit and Systemic
Instability” at the Finance Workshop, John M. Olin
School of Business, Washington U. in St. Louis, Oct. 27.
A special treat was a “tour” of St. Louis blues
nightspots after the seminar by preeminent banking theorist
and musician Philip Dyvig.

Bruce Etnyre,
associate professor, Dept. of Kinesiology, gave a presentation
titled “H-reflex Changes in Systonia” at the Society
for Neuroscience in New Orleans, Nov. 7. The presentation
was a comparison of modulation of the spinal reflex to determine
differences between dystonia patients and patients with
Parkinson’s disease.
Laura Hsu, assistant dean, School of Continuing Studies,
was one of 33 national delegates to a meeting of Asian-Pacific
Americans held this summer to endorse a presidential candidate.
It was the first time Asian-Pacific Americans have united
to back a national political candidate. Hsu was elected
as a nonpartisan delegate from Houston by the 350,000-member
Asian-Pacific American coalition called the “80-20
Initiative.” She received the second-highest number
of votes among independent delegates. During the meeting,
held Aug. 25-27 in Los Angeles, the delegates met with representatives
from both major parties.

Maria-Regina
Kecht
, associate professor of German studies and director,
Center for the Study of Languages, was an invited speaker
at the third annual Colloquium on International Engineering
Education Oct. 12-14 at the U. of Rhode Island. She presented
a paper on the topic “Are Faculty Ready for Global
Competence?”
George E. Marcus, professor, Dept. of Anthropology, gave
a seminar to the Dept. of Anthropology at Yale U. Oct. 31
on transnational research and changes in the practice of
fieldwork and ethnography.

Web site has been named an SR Books
Best Civil War Web Site Selection by the editors of “The
Civil War on the Web: A Guide to the Very Best Sites.” The site was judged on content, aesthetics and navigation
and is one of only nine sites awarded this honor.

William Robedee,
general manager, KTRU, gave a presentation titled “The
Future of College Broadcasting” at a meeting of the
College Media Advisers/College Broadcasters Nov. 11 in Washington,
D. C. Specifics discussed included IBOC, satellite radio,
LPFM, multiple program opportunities, content, funding and
more.
