renamed to honor memory of Mary Voswinkel

The Texas/New Mexico Association of College and University
Police Departments has named its annual scholarship in honor
of Rice’s retired chief of police Mary Voswinkel, who
died in October.

“Due to
her numerous contributions to the field of law enforcement,
to campus law enforcement and specifically to the Texas/New
Mexico Association of College and University Police Departments,
the association’s board felt this would be an appropriate
legacy,” said Tom Bickers, assistant chief of police
at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Police
Department and a member of the association.

Voswinkel served
the Rice community for 21 years, 14 years as the chief of
police. The University of Houston graduate joined the Rice
department in 1978 as assistant chief. Under Voswinkel’s
guidance, the department made great strides in the areas
of crime prevention and officer training, which led to numerous
awards for the department and its officers.

The Texas/New
Mexico Association of College and University Police Departments
awards the scholarship annually to an employee at one of
its member institutions to assist in the completion of a
degree.
