Rice faculty
and staff were honored for their years of service to the
university at a Feb. 6 luncheon. Employees were given a
token of appreciation for service ranging from five years
to 40 years.

Retirees also
were recognized at the ceremony. Twenty-nine of the 41 retirees
had more than 20 years of service to the university, and
trees will be planted on campus in their honor — living
reminders of their service to Rice.

Dean Currie,
vice president for finance and administration, noted that
two current employees have given four decades of service
to the university — Sophy Silversteen, catalog librarian
at Fondren Library, and David Hellums, the A.J. Hartsook
Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering.

Silversteen’s
accomplishments during her years at Rice include teaching
at The University of Texas School for Library Science and
serving as secretary for the Rice Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
Hellums’ remarkable work here includes serving as chairman
of the chemical engineering department from 1970 to ’75
and as dean of the George R. Brown School of Engineering
from 1980 to ’88.

“Many organizations
struggle to keep long-term employees,” said Currie,
who spoke for President Mal-colm Gillis, who was away on
university business. “But at Rice, the number of honorees
has risen in each of the past nine years, making this the
largest number of service awards ever given. This trend
is one measure of your dedication to Rice — a commitment
that has helped to make Rice the leading university it is
today.”

He added that
the continued service of Rice faculty and staff will play
an important role in meeting the goals of the university
set out in the strategic plan, “Rice: The Next Century.”

“Each day,
we all see — and hear — the new construction that
will house Rice’s programs in the 21st century. But
it is the people who teach and work in those buildings who
will make it possible to fully realize the bold plan we
have envisioned,” Currie said.

To all those
honored at the luncheon, Currie said, “There is an
epigram most appropriate for this occasion. It says, ‘We
make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we
give.’ All of you have not only made a living here,
you have made a life here. And in doing so, you give life
and vitality to the purposes of our university.”

Rice’s
new associate vice president for human resources, Mary Cronin,
also addressed the faculty and staff at the ceremony. On
board only since last month, Cronin joked that she has less
service than anyone else at the ceremony.
