Gallery
to host installation art lecture Feb. 25
…………………………………………………………………
Noted West Coast
curator Renny Pritikin will give a free public lecture,
The More Theatrical the Better, at 2 p.m. Feb.
25 in Sewall Hall, Room 301.
Presently chief
curator of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a major
visual and performing arts space in San Francisco, Pritikin
has more than two decades of experience working with installation
art. He has curated numerous exhibitions of installation
art and has authored several catalog essays and articles
on the subject.
His talk will
touch on issues such as the artist as autocrat, artwork
as memento, artwork existing to make a site look good and
vice versa, whether noise is as good as music and the idea
that in art, materials such as marble are no better than
ordinary objects, like a plastic bag. The talk is free and
open to the public and will be followed by a wine-and-cheese
reception. For more information call (713) 348-6069.
The More
Theatrical the Better is the second lecture in the
series Installation USA, sponsored by the Rice
Art Gallery. The series brings to Houston leading curators
of installation art from across the country and asks each
of them to address the current state of the genre. The series
will conclude March 25 with a lecture by Michael Olijnyk
and Barbara Luderowski, co-directors of the Mattress Factory
Museum in Pittsburgh.
