THE FUTURE OF
EDUCATION IS FOCUS OF TALK AT RICE UNIVERSITY

“Teaching and
Learning for the 21st Century” will be the topic when Linda Darling-Hammond,
professor of education at Stanford University and recognized authority on school
reform, speaks in the Grand Hall of the Rice Memorial Center on Thursday, March
1, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
A reception and book signing will follow the
lecture.

The lecture is
co-sponsored by The Houston Annenberg Challenge and Rice University Center for
Education.

Dr. Darling-Hammond is
professor of Teaching and Teacher Education at Stanford University and executive
director of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future. This
blue-ribbon panel’s 1996 report, What Matters Most: Teaching for America’s
Future, offered a major blueprint for transforming education and already has led
to sweeping policy changes affecting teaching and schooling at all levels of
government and to ongoing reform in the preparation of teachers.

Her research, teaching
and policy work focus on issues of school restructuring, teacher education and
educational equity. Dr. Darling-Hammond is author or editor of eight books,
including “The Right to Learn: A Blueprint for Creating Schools that Work,”
which was awarded the Outstanding Book Award from the American Educational
Research Association in 1998.

Prior to her appointment
at Stanford, Dr. Darling-Hammond taught at Columbia University, where she also
was co-director of the National Center for Restructuring Education, Schools and
Teaching. She has served on many national advisory boards, including the White
House Advisory Panel’s Resource Group for the National Education
Goals.

Dr. Darling-Hammond
received her B.A. from Yale University and doctorate in urban education from
Temple University. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary
degrees.
