In an article about nanoscience and nanoengineering, Neal
Lane, university professor, commented that these areas are
the most likely to produce the breakthroughs of tomorrow.
Richard Smalley, the Gene and Norman Hackerman Professor
of Chemistry and professor of physics, commented that these
areas represent a final frontier.

Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology, commented that
Continental Airlines Houston headquarters is home
to one of the fastest-growing Hispanic populations in the
nation. The article mentioned Klinebergs Houston
Area Study. Klineberg said that the work force of
the future is going to be even more diverse than today and
that companies must meet these groups halfway with support
systems, encouragement, diversity training and management
programs.
Physics Today
An article featured the transition of Lane from that of
former science adviser to President Clinton to a position
teaching science and technology policy at Rice.
Houston Chronicle
Klineberg said that Houston is a new center for new immigration,
noting that this is seen most clearly in the schools.
Bob Stein, dean of social sciences, commented that if the
Republican party is going to prevail in the future, its
going to have to stake out not just blacks and Hispanics,
but gay voters as well. He also noted that the GOP is leaning
toward these groups not necessarily to win votes but to
cut into the margins of traditional Democratic voting blocs.
An article profiled R. Steve Letbetter, who is a member
of the Council of Overseers for the Rice University Jesse
H. Jones Graduate School of Management.
An article featured a weekend science and engineering event
for Girl Scouts held at Rice. The article mentioned that
Stephanie Shipp, postdoctoral research associate in the
Department of Earth Science, described her work in the Antarctic
to the Girl Scouts.
KHOU-TV
In a story on the growth of the Hispanic population in Houston,
Klineberg commented that Hispanic influence is lower than
it ought to be given its numbers because of such low levels
of education.
KTRK-TV
Robin Forman, professor of mathematics, commented on the
$85 million lotto jackpot, saying that no matter what numbers
a person picked and no matter how that person picked them,
his or her odds of having a winning ticket are 1 in 6 million.
KTRH-AM
A story featured the De Lang Conference held at Rice. Jim
Pomerantz, professor of psychology and director of the neurosciences
program, commented on the conference.
Commenting on the odds of winning the the $85 million Texas
lotto jackpot, Forman said that a persons odds of
getting a flush are better and that even people who play
cards a great deal have never had or been dealt a royal
flush.
