Rice University’s
George R. Brown Forensics Society was designated the best
combined speech and debate program in the country at the
Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament and Convention.

Eighteen students
represented Rice at the tournament, held March 28-31 at
Idaho’s Boise State University. Pi Kappa Delta, the
oldest national honorary organization for collegiate speech
and debate, sponsors the national tournament each year to
test students in public speaking, oral interpretation, debate,
discussion and reader’s theater. The Rice University
team competed in more than 15 events, winning more than
50 awards, including five national championships.

Members of Rice’s
Forensics Society also recently competed at the National
Parliamentary Debate Association Championship Tournament
at Metropolitan State College of Denver, March 22-26. Five
debate teams, comprised of two students each, represented
Rice in a field of nearly 300 teams. Three of the teams
cleared the top 100, propelling Rice to a fourth place ranking.
