Place festival set for April 21

A celebration
of the University Place neighborhood, including its people,
businesses and institutions, will be held on the Rice campus
April 21.
The annual University
Place Super Neighborhood Festival will be held from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. at Rice Stadium south entrance off University
Boulevard between Greenbriar and Stockton. Rice University
faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend the
event.
The festival
will offer activities for all ages, including a bicycle
rodeo for children under 11 and a bicycle university, where
participants can test their bike skills, determine their
safety IQ and receive a free bike safety inspection and
tune-up. Children and adults alike will be able to check
out Houston Police Department helicopters, motorcycles,
cars and mounted police units, and the Houston Fire Department
will offer youngsters the chance to climb aboard fire trucks
and even try on fire-fighting gear.
Other activities
will include face painting and crafts, Houston Police Department
child fingerprinting and more. Information will be available
from the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Texas Childrens
Hospital will provide child car seat and bike helmet information.
Information on campus activities, including courses and
other services offered, will be available.
Elected officials,
including District C City Councilman Mark Goldberg and other
community leaders, will be at the event.
University Place
neighborhoods include Southhampton, Southgate, Southampton
Extension, Old Braeswood, the museum area, Boulevard Oaks
and Morningside Place. Others invited to the festival include
Rice Village patrons and merchants and children from Roberts
and Poe elementary schools.
