RICE UNIVERSITY
PROFESSOR RECEIVES NATIONAL PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

Neal Lane of Rice
University received one of two Year 2001 Public Service Awards May 16 in a
ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The awards were given
jointly by three major American scientific societies: the American Astronomical
Society, the American Mathematical Society and the American Physical Society.
They chose Lane and Congressman Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) for the awards in
recognition of committed and sustained efforts in support of science.

Lane, university
professor at Rice and senior fellow at Rice’s James A. Baker III Institute for
Public Policy, is a former assistant to the president for science and technology
and a former director of the National Science Foundation. He was instrumental in
raising science research and education to a high priority in the Clinton
administration. The fiscal year 2001 federal budget, in which science agency
budgets received much larger increases than in recent years, reflected Lane’s
efforts.

The awards were
presented at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill.
