can sharpen skills through HR training

As the campus
gears up for the start of the fall semester, Rice staff
members might want to consider taking one of the training
courses offered by the human resources department. Courses
are offered on such topics as writing job descriptions,
improving work performance and resolving conflicts.
All training
sessions will take place in the Human Resources Training
Room at 5620 Greenbriar, Suite 270.

Coaching
for Success: Thursday, Aug. 9, 9 a.m. to noon, or Tuesday,
Oct. 9, 9 a.m. to noon.
The purpose
of this training is to help supervisors develop competencies
to coach employees successfully. At the completion of training,
participants should understand what coaching is and how
it differs from counseling; know when, why and how to apply
coaching techniques to a situation; and be able to apply
the six-step coaching process to a situation that calls
for coaching.
The target audience
for training is supervisors, though nonsupervisors may benefit
from the training and are welcome to attend, with the approval
of their supervisors.
Conflict
Resolution: Wednesday, Aug. 1, 8:30 a.m. to noon (part
I), and Thursday, Aug. 2, 8:30 a.m. to noon (part II), or
Tuesday, Oct. 2, 8:30 a.m. to noon (part I) and Wednesday,
Oct. 3, 8:30 a.m. to noon (part II).
The purpose
of this training is to help participants identify specific
goals that they want to reach in resolving conflicts with
others. The course is based on increasing each attendees
understanding of his or her conflict resolution style and
the strengths and development opportunities within each
style. Participants build skills essential to effective
conflict management and develop a plan for immediate application
in a conflict situation.
The target audience
for training is anyone who deals with people.
How
To Be an Outstanding Supervisor: Tuesday, Aug. 7, 9
a.m. to 4 p.m., or Wednesday, Oct. 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The course teaches
supervisors how to coach, motivate, counsel and lead by
example. Supervisors will learn to evaluate performance
and increase productivity, even under difficult circumstances.
The target audience is all supervisors, whether they are
new to supervising or have been in management for years.
New
Hire Orientation: Aug. 14, Aug. 28, Sept. 11, Sept.
25, Oct. 16, Nov. 6, Nov. 27 and Dec. 18, from 8:15 a.m.
to 3:15 p.m.
This training
is to acquaint new benefits-eligible staff to the campus,
Rices programs and the benefits to which employees
are entitled. The program includes information sessions
from key departments and service providers inside and outside
of Rice, as well as a tour of the campus.
More seasoned
staff who would like to further their knowledge about the
campus and its offerings are welcome to attend as space
permits.
Performance
Appraisal Refresher Training for Supervisors: Friday,
Sept. 28, 9 a.m. to noon, or Monday, Nov. 12, 1:30 to 4:30
p.m.
This course
refreshes supervisors on key aspects of the Performance
Appraisal Program as they prepare to evaluate the performance
of their staff. At the completion of training, participants
will be able to work with staff to set goals and measurable,
objective outcomes for performance, be able to demonstrate
effective ways to give feedback on performance, and know
the proper ways to document performance.
Performance
Appraisal Supervisor Training: Monday, Sept. 17, 1:30
to 4:30 p.m. (part I), and Monday, Sept. 24, 1:30 to 4:30
p.m. (part II), or Wednesday, Oct. 31, 9 a.m. to noon (part
I), and Wednesday, Nov. 7, 9 a.m. to noon (part II).
This course
is designed to prepare supervisors to use the Performance
Appraisal Program to evaluate successfully and to enhance
both the performance and results of the staff they supervise.
At the completion of training, participants will understand
the purposes and objectives for performance appraisal, understand
how the performance appraisal process can serve as a management
tool rather than a management task, know how to prepare
for, conduct and follow through after a successful performance
appraisal interview and understand how to use documentation
for performance appraisals.
Performance
Appraisal Training for Nonsupervisors: Wednesday, Sept.
19, 9 a.m. to noon, or Friday, Nov. 9, 9 a.m. to noon.
This training
course informs nonsupervisory staff about the Performance
Appraisal Program so that they can take a more active role
in their performance and its evaluation. At the completion
of training, participants will understand when, how and
why performance appraisals are conducted, their role in
the process and the importance of setting goals, objectives
and standards of performance. They also will know how to
prepare for and participate in a successful performance
appraisal interview and how the new forms are used in performance
appraisals.
Performance
Improvement Counseling: Thursday, Aug. 16, 9 a.m. to
noon, or Thursday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m. to noon.
This course
will teach supervisors how to counsel employees for improved
performance. At the completion of training, participants
will know when and why to counsel, be able to identify the
four types of counseling actions, understand the importance
of documentation, be familiar with guidelines for conducting
a counseling session and know when to communicate with human
resources on employee issues.
The target audience for training is supervisors, and prior
completion of Coaching for Success is strongly
recommended. Class size is limited to 17.
Writing
Effective Job Descriptions Training: Friday, Sept. 14,
9 a.m. to noon, and Tuesday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m. to noon.
The purpose
of this training is to provide participants with the information
and tools necessary to feel comfortable about and competent
in writing job descriptions. At the completion of training,
participants will understand the nature of job descriptions,
be familiar with the sections of the job description and
how to use each section, and be able to write a job description
using the tools and resources provided.
