RICE UNIVERSITY
POSTPONES THIS WEEKEND’S
ATHLETIC COMPETITION
Due to the terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on Tuesday, Rice University
has postponed or cancelled all athletic competition through Sunday, Sept. 16,
University president Dr. Malcolm Gillis and athletic director Bobby May
announced Wednesday afternoon.
Included is the Owls’
Saturday football game at Nebraska, the Continental Cup men’s tennis tournament
at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, and the Rice Invitational men’s and women’s
cross country meet on the Rice campus.
“Our deepest sympathies
are extended to the victims of this week’s events,” said May. “Due to these
tragedies, the Rice University athletic department has decided not to
participate in competitions this weekend.”
In addition, the Rice
women’s soccer team has postponed its game on Sunday at North Texas, and the
Owls’ participation in the Lady Razorback women’s tennis tournament in
Fayetteville, Ark., and the Tiger Classic volleyball tournament in Baton Rouge,
La., have been cancelled.
The football game will
be played on Thursday, Sept. 20, at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb., at 6:30
pm (CDT). A possible date for the soccer match at North Texas is to be
determined.
Rice University is consistently ranked one of America’s
best teaching and research universities. It is distinguished by its: size-2,700
undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students; selectivity-10 applicants for each
place in the freshman class; resources-an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio
of 5-to-1, and the fourth largest endowment per student among private American
universities; residential college system, which builds communities that are both
close-knit and diverse; and collaborative culture, which crosses disciplines,
integrates teaching and research, and intermingles undergraduate and graduate
work. Rice’s wooded campus is located in the nation’s fourth largest city and on
America’s South Coast.
