Fall R.A.D. classes scheduled

Fall
R.A.D. classes scheduled

…………………………………………………………………

The Rice University
Police Department continues its commitment to crime prevention
by offering Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) courses during
the fall semester.

The R.A.D. system
is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques.
Rice offers a comprehensive R.A.D. course for women that
begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance,
while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

All female students,
staff, faculty and female dependants can take the course
free of charge. Three series of courses will be held this
fall:

• Sept.
24-26 and Oct. 1-2, 5 to 8 p.m.
• Oct. 22-24 and 29-30, 5 to 8 p.m.
• Nov. 12-14 and 19-20, 5 to 8 p.m.

To register
or for more information, visit the police department’s
R.A.D. Web page at <http://rupd.rice.edu/rad/>.

Over the summer,
two R.A.D. instructors from the Rice police department were
certified to teach self-defense for men. A R.A.D. training
course for men, which might be offered at Rice, would teach
men to identify aggressive behavior, how to disengage from
a potentially dangerous situation and how to defend themselves
from an aggressive act and escape to safety.

If offered,
the course would include 12 hours of crime resistance education,
physical defense strategies and confrontational avoidance.
It would not be a martial arts course, and it would not
mirror the ongoing self-defense training for women.

Male students,
faculty, staff and their male dependents who are interested
in such training should contact Sgt. Jim Baylor, R.A.D.
training coordinator, at <baylor@rice.edu>.
Based on the response, a course may be scheduled in the
near future.
