Times
Amy Myers Jaffe, senior energy adviser at the James A. Baker
III Institute for Public Policy, commented on how OPECs
inaction is affecting oil prices.
Mahmoud A. El-Gamal, professor of Islamic economics, finance
and management and professor of economics, commented in
a New York Times Web article that it wasnt until the
1970s that Islamic, or interest-free, banking systems were
discussed.

Jaffe commented on OPEC. She also commented on OPEC and
its newfound spirit of cooperation in Fortune.

Week
Ken Kennedy, the Ann and John Doerr Professor in Computational
Engineering and professor in electrical and computer engineering,
commented on the dwindling flow of money for new technology
ideas.
The Economist
An article cited results of a survey conducted by Professor
of Sociology Stephen Klineberg. He also was reported saying
that new immigrants from Mexico arrive lagging further behind
the rest of the country educationally than did the wave
of immigrants in the early 1900s.
Nature
An article mentioned the observation by Randall Hulet, the
Fayez Sarofim Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and his
colleagues of a dramatic collapse in the Bose-Einstein condensate
system they were working on.
Nation
In an article about Edison Schools Inc., Linda McNeil, professor
of education, was quoted as saying the willingness to contract
with Edison is a public admission of the failure to invest
equitably in low-income schools.
Science
Neal Lane, university professor and senior fellow at the
James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, commented
in an article on the appointment of John H. Marburger III
as President Bushs science adviser.
Phil Bedient, the Herman Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental
Engineering, commented on the flooding from Tropical Storm
Allison, saying that there is no way any flood prevention
system could survive that amount of rain.
Houston Chronicle
An article about International University Bremen and Rice
included a quote by President Malcolm Gillis, who commented
on Rices collaboration with IUB and said that Germany
is the economic, political and intellectual crossroads of
Europe. Tom Hochstettler, associate provost of international
affairs, and Raymond O. Wells, professor emeritus of mathematics
and education, were mentioned as helping IUB get started.
An article reported that Rice was among 28 colleges and
universities that signed an agreement designed to prevent
the use of financial aid offers to compete for students.
The article mentioned Gillis as saying the agreement will
have little effect at Rice University because the school
already provides generous financial aid to its students.
KTRH-AM
Ira Gruber, the Harris Masterson Jr. Professor of History,
commented on the results of a survey that showed teens know
little of history.
Wallach commented on voting machines purchased by Harris
County.

A story about artificial blood featured a lab at Rice. John
Olson, the Ralph and Dorothy Looney Professor of Biochemistry
and Cell Biology, commented that theyre trying to
brew new blood.
