Rice takes 6-1 record into Saturday’s game

The Rice Owls will head into their Oct. 27 football game against Louisiana Tech with a 6-1 record. Saturday’s game, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Louisiana Tech’s Joe Aillet Stadium, can be seen on Fox Sports Southwest and heard on KTRH-AM 740 starting at 1:15 p.m. The teams last met in 1965, with Rice winning that game 14-0.

On Oct. 21, the Owls won their fourth straight with a 33-30 Western Athletic Conference victory over Nevada. Robbie Beck rushed for a career-high 156 yards and scored three touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. The game was Beck’s first 100-yard game, and he provided a devastating one-two punch along with quarterback Kyle Herm, who ran for 93 yards on 22 carries.

In other football news, linebacker Joe Bob Thompson was named the WAC defensive player of the week for his part in the Owls’ 21-13 win at Navy Oct. 13. Thompson had 17 tackles and one sack in the victory.

Thompson was the fourth Owl to win the WAC defensive award this season. Brandon Green, Greg Gatlin and Dan Dawson previously were honored.

New and improved Rice Cinema

After a three-month upgrade, Rice Cinema is opening its doors, sporting a new sound system, a new state-of-the-art silver screen and upgraded projectors. The first film at which moviegoers can experience all the improvements is the Stanley Kubrick classic “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love the Bomb.”

Released two years after the Cuban missile crisis, “Dr. Strangelove” is a black comedy about the nuclear arms race starring Peter Sellers in the roles of Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake, President Merkin Muffley and Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott as Gen. “Buck” Turgidson; and Slim Pickins as Maj. T.J. “King” Kong. Rice Cinema chose this satire of politics, war and jingoism as its opening film in acknowledgement of the tragic events of Sept. 11 and in the hope of encouraging a dialogue.

Show times are 7 and 9:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2; Saturday, Nov. 3; Sunday, Nov. 4; Wednesday, Nov. 7; and Thursday, Nov. 8.
