Randi Martin,
the Elma Schneider Professor of Psychology, was elected
a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS) — the world’s largest federation
of scientists.

This honor recognizes
AAAS members for their efforts to advance science or to
foster applications that are deemed scientifically or socially
distinguished.

Martin, who
is director of the undergraduate Cognitive Sciences Program
and head of the graduate program in cognitive psychology
at Rice, was recognized for outstanding contributions to
the study of short-term memory and language processing and
to the understanding of the brain organization supporting
these cognitive functions.

Nominations
for AAAS fellows are voted on by the organization’s
policy-making council.The 288 members who recently were
awarded the distinction of fellow will be presented a certificate
and pin at the AAAS annual meeting in Boston in February.

Founded in 1848,
AAAS works to advance science for human well-being. With
more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies,
AAAS conducts programs in the areas of science policy, science
education and international scientific cooperation.
