WRITER TONY DIAZ TO SPEAK AT HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION

In honor of Hispanic
Heritage celebration, fiction writer Tony Diaz, who teaches creative writing at
Rice University, will give a lecture on “From Sun Stone to Palm Pilot: A Brief
History of Mexican American Time,” at 4 p.m., Wednesday, December 5 in the Grand
Hall of the Rice Memorial Center.

Diaz is the author of
The Aztec Love God, which won the 1998 Nilon Award for excellence in minority
writing. He is also the founder of Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their
Say, which serves as a forum to showcase Latino writers from all across the
nation.

The author of three
plays, among them Mi Mama Versus Superman, Diaz has written a number of essays
and stories that have been published in such publications as the Los Angeles
Times and the Houston Chronicle. He also edited the Latino Herectis: An
Anthology of Radical Writing.

He graduated from De
Paul University in 1990 and received a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the
University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program in 1994.

The president’s office
is sponsoring the lecture. Food, drinks, and mariachi music will follow the
presentation.
