Rice
mourns Hammond’s death
…………………………………………………………………
Michael P. Hammond,
former dean of the Shepherd School of Music, died suddenly
Jan. 29. He was 69 years old.
President Malcolm
Gillis said in a statement to the campus community on Tuesday:
Only 11 days ago, we honored Michael for his service
as dean of the Shepherd School and wished him well in his
new position as the presidentially appointed chairman of
the National Endowment for the Arts.
Michael
Hammond leaves a family and a university permanently enriched
by his vision, strength of character, integrity and indomitable
spirit.
If Rice
University is a living monument to William Marsh Rice and
Edgar Odell Lovett, the Shepherd School of Music is so also
for Michael Hammond.
Hammond assumed
office as the eighth chairman of the NEA Jan. 22.
Funeral arrangements
were not available at the time Rice News went to press Tuesday.
Information on arrangements will be available through Clarks
Funeral Home, Four Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, N.Y., 10536,
(914) 232-3033.
A full story
will run in the Feb. 7 Rice News. A campus memorial service
is planned for 3 p.m. March 14 at Stude Concert Hall.
