Julie Browning, dean for undergraduate enrollment, commented
that because of the disruption in postal service caused
by the anthrax scares, Rice would be flexible about the
Nov. 1, 2001, postmark deadline for student applications.

Amy Jaffe, senior energy adviser at the James A. Baker III
Institute for Public Policy, commented that Saudi Arabia
has made it clear that it has disagreed with some aspects
of U.S. foreign policy, but that has been kept separate
from the kingdoms role as a stable oil supplier to
the United States.

Commenting on the need for communication in the war on terrorism
to keep the U.S. coalition united, Edward Djerejian, director
of the Baker Institute, said the United States needs its
own public diplomacy program that must explain in the languages
of the region exactly what America is about.

An article about Russian President Vladimir Putins
visit to Texas mentioned that he stopped at Rice. Jaffe
commented that in the early 90s, the United States
didnt want Russia making money from oil and gas as
it might spend that money on its military. Jaffe added that
today the United States cannot move forward without taking
a cooperative approach with Russia on energy.

In an article about Houston-based companies that are experiencing
bad times and how it is affecting Houston, Stephen Klineberg,
professor of sociology, commented that Enron, Compaq and
Continental were all companies on which Houston was basing
its 21st-century success in the post-oil world. Jaffe noted
that Houston encourages people to take risks.

An article featured remarks made by Putin during a visit
to the Baker Institute. The article mentioned that among
those onstage with Putin were James Baker III, chairman
of the Baker Institute; President Malcolm Gillis; and Djerejian.
A photo of John
Margrave, the E.D. Butcher Professor of Chemistry, demonstrating
magic appeared. Margrave discussed how science
attempts to explain most of the things people regard as
magic.
Commenting on
the FrogPad, a one-handed typing keyboard, Ramamirtham Sukumar,
lecturer on management at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School
of Management, said the key benefit is that it is full-sized;
users are not trying to manipulate tiny keys.
ukumar added
that he is fairly confident that the FrogPad will see a
successful market. Steve Currall, director of the Rice Alliance,
commented on the FrogPad and its inventor, Linda Marroquin.
In an article
about an expected reduction in daily production quotas by
OPEC ministers, Jaffe was quoted as saying that the Saudis
are telling people this is a one-time thing and that they
believe they will not have to stay this low for a prolonged
period of time.
A letter to
the editor written by Peter Veruki, executive director of
admissions and career planning at the Jones School, appeared.
In a letter
to the editor, the writer mentioned Klineberg as saying
that Houston was moving out of a 20th century oil-based
economy into a 21st-century economy based on information
and technology.
Bob Stein, dean
of social sciences, commented on the Proposition 2 same-sex
benefits referendum in the Nov. 6 election.

Phil Bedient, the Herman Brown Professor of Civil and Environmental
Engineering, commented on doors designed to prevent flooding
of the Texas Medical Center basements.

the progress in the war on terrorism.
