service for Hammond

A memorial service
for Michael Hammond, former dean of the Shepherd School
of Music, will be held at 3 p.m. March 14 at Stude Concert
Hall in Alice Pratt Brown Hall.
Hammond died
from complications of cancer Jan. 29 in Washington, D.C.
He was 69. He had been appointed as new chairman of the
National Endowment for the Arts just before his death.
A funeral mass
for Hammond was held Feb. 4 at St. Patricks Roman
Catholic Church in Bedford Village, N.Y.

honor of Hammond can be made to the Shepherd School of Music,
Rice University, MS 532, P.O. Box 1892, Houston, TX 77251-1892.
Grad student
earns NSF fellowship

Shelly Harvey,
who will receive her Ph.D. in mathematics this May, is the
first student from Rices Department of Mathematics
to win a coveted National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical
Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Fewer than 30
of the fellowships are awarded annually. Harvey will spend
the first year of the fellowship conducting full-time research
in low-dimensional topology at the University of California,
San Diego. Harveys research centers around use of
noncommutative invariants in the classification of three-dimensional
objects. Harvey will combine the final two years of her
NSF fellowship with a Moore Instructorship at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, dividing her time between teaching
and research.
