Womens
track makes history

Allison Beckford
won the 400-meter NCAA title with a new school and Western
Athletic Conference record, as the Owls finished fifth with
25 points March 9 at the 2002 NCAA indoor track and field
championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Beckford, a junior from Sawanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica
(Mannings), ran the two laps in a record-setting time of
52.16 seconds. Last years outdoor 400-meter champion
added an indoor title to her resume on Saturday, earning
all-America status along the way.
Allison is a fighter, head coach Victor Lopez
said. She has a competitive spirit, and that showed
today. I am so proud of her.
Aimee Teteris, competing in her final NCAA indoor championship,
ran the 800 meters in 2:06.51, good for a fourth-place finish
and all-America honors. Earlier this season, the senior
from Toronto, Canada (Birchmount Park), recorded a school
record of 2:06.11, a mark that automatically qualified her
for the national meet.
Aimee was phenomenal, added Lopez. She
ran a solid race, and really showed her potential today.
In high jump competition, Rices all-around athlete,
Keitha Moseley, tied for 13th, crossing the bar at 5-09
1¦4. The Lovett College senior won the WAC high jump
title two weeks ago with a jump of 5-10 1¦2.
The Owls 1,600-meter relay crew of Yvonne Umeh, Moseley,
Teteris, and Beckford took seventh with a season-best time
of 3:36.96.
I am so excited for these girls and what theyve
accomplished, said Lopez. This is a great feat
for our program. Im ready for the outdoor season.
The Owls fifth-place finish is the best in school
history since Rice finished sixth in 1989. Complete results

Rice will open the outdoor season March 22 and 23 at the
Texas Southern Relays. The Owls will host the Rice Bayou
Classic March 29 and 30 at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
