Scientia looks at difficulties of taking research from lab
to policy

The upcoming
Scientia lecture on
April 16 will address the difficulties of moving social
and psychological research from the laboratory into the
realm of social policy.
James W. Pennebaker, professor of psychology at The University
of Texas at Austin, will deliver a presentation titled Applying
Social and Psychological Research to Societal Problems
at 4 p.m. in the Kyle Morrow Room of Fondren Library.
Pennebakers presentation will address how some of
the most vexing health problems of today AIDS, bioterrorism,
stress-related illnesses, crime and substance abuse
can be analyzed through the lens of psychological and social
processes.
He also will discuss how policymakers can use current research
to help create a healthier society by considering peoples
basic needs, loves and fears.
The theme for this years annual Scientia program is
Health and Welfare Policy, with speakers addressing
the prospects for human health and welfare in the new century.
Scientia is an institute of Rice University faculty founded
in 1981 by the mathematician and historian of science Salomon
Bochner. Scientia provides an opportunity for scholarly
discussion across disciplinary boundaries; its members and
fellows come from a wide range of academic disciplines.
