Rice Student Art Exhibition opens at Rice Gallery April

All That,
the 39th annual Rice Student Art Exhibition, will be on
view at Rice Gallery from April 26 through May 11. The exhibition
introduces the public to the work of graduating seniors
in Rices art and art history department and includes
works in a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture,
installation, printmaking, fashion design, photography and
video. Working with a guest curator, artist Patricia Hernandez,
the students have selected works that best represent their
artistic achievement and creative progression at Rice. Much
of the work will be available for sale at the end of the
exhibition.
The opening reception for the exhibit will be at Rice Gallery
Thursday, April 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature
performances by the Rice Players at 6:30 p.m. and the Rice
Dance Theater at 6:45 p.m. Refreshments will include complimentary
ice cream and wine as well as beer hand-crafted by the brew
master at Saint Arnold Brewing Company. The event is free
and open to the public.
Opening receptions for exhibitions of undergraduate work
will be held the same evening at two additional locations
on campus. Works selected by faculty from studio art classes
in photography, film, sculpture and printmaking will be
displayed at the Rice Media Center. The opening reception
in the Rice Media Center from 7 to 9 p.m. will feature an
awards presentation at 7:30 p.m. followed by continuous
screenings of student films. Undergraduate student works
will remain on view in the Media Center through Oct. 4.
Works in drawing and painting by undergraduate students
will be displayed in a guerrilla show in the
fourth-floor art studios of Sewall Hall. A reception will
be held in the studios from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The guerilla
show will be on view through May 11.
Rice Gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m.; Thursdays until 8 p.m.; and Sundays, noon to
5 p.m. Rice Gallery is closed Mondays and university holidays.
Rice Gallery programs receive support from Rice Gallery
patrons and members, the Brown Foundation and the Kilgore
Endowment. The gallery receives partial operating support
from the City of Houston and the Texas Commission on the
Arts through the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris
County. Continental Airlines is the official airline of
the Rice Gallery. KUHF-FM and Saint Arnold Brewing Company
are sponsors.
