of Jordan to speak at Baker Institute May 9

King Abdullah
II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan will speak at Rice
at noon May 9 in Stude Concert Hall at Alice Pratt Brown
Hall.
Abdullah is the 43rd generation direct descendant of the
Prophet Muhammad. Abdullah became king of Jordan Feb. 7,
1999, after his father, King Hussein, died.
Since his ascension to the throne, Abdullah has been trying
to further Jordans democratic institutionalization
and political pluralism, while also working for comprehensive
peace in the Middle East. He has placed great emphasis on
revitalizing Jordans economy and joining the Euro
Med Partnership and World Trade Organization.
Abdullahs visit to campus was arranged by the James
A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. At press time,
the topic of Abdullahs presentation was not available.
Tickets will be required for admission to this event. Students,
faculty and staff should e-mail the Baker Institute at <bakerwww@rice.edu>
no later than May 6 to obtain ticketing procedures. For
security reasons, purses, backpacks, briefcases, cameras
or similar items cannot be brought into the lecture hall.
