LUCE FELLOWSHIP
…………………………………………………………………
Maria Stalford 01 is one of 18 nationwide recipients of a 2002 Luce Scholarship. She will spend a year in the Far East studying and learning about Asian art and the art marketplace.
At press time, the Luce Foundation was working with the Asia Foundation to identify a host institution for Stalfords professional internship. The internship will last just under a year.
Because of my experience working in contemporary art as the curatorial assistant at the Rice Art Gallery, and my undergraduate degree in anthropology, some promising options at this stage in the placement process appear to be contemporary art museums and museums that highlight local minority cultures, Stalford said.
It goes without saying that it is a fascinating time to be living in and observing Asia, she added. With many Asian nations undergoing rapid social, political and economic transformation, it will be interesting to see the confluence of old traditions and new ways of life. To my knowledge, the Luce Scholars program is almost unique among fellowships in its emphasis on the professional internship experience. To me, being integrated into a local work environment provides an especially interesting vantage point for understanding and experiencing a foreign culture.
Upon her return, Stalford plans to enter a doctoral program in social and cultural anthropology. Since graduating from Rice, Stalford has done some freelance writing, which she said she hopes to continue.
The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for U.S. students to live and work in Asia. Since 1974, the program has sought to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society.
