Magazine
An article written by Kathleen S. Matthews, dean of the
Wiess School of Natural Sciences, described various ways
Rice has developed to meet challenges of the future. The
interdisciplinary work carried on at Rice to deal with the
nano-bio-info-enviro frontiers was described. The article
also stated the necessity of a scientifically literate public
to be able to make the kinds of decisions that will be necessary
in the future.
USA Today
An article discussed the results of a USA Today/CNN/Gallup
Poll that pointed up differences between Americans and residents
of predominantly Islamic countries. Ussama Makdisi, associate
professor of history, commented that the differences were
largely in perception, rather than in values.
Fortune
An article discussed how Houston is surviving not only the
Enron collapse, but troubles at Compaq and Continental as
well. Enrons contributions to Houston were also covered.
Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology, commented on
the element of glamour Enron added to Houston.
National
Public Radio
Thomas Hill, professor of physics and astronomy, participated
in a panel discussion on the repair jobs being undertaken
by the Space Shuttle Columbia.
Nature
In an article about the data that was sent back by two spacecraft,
Cassini and Galileo, when they met at Jupiter, Hill commented
on the fact that scientists were taking advantage of this
first-ever opportunity.
Science News
An article that featured the future of nanotechnology quoted
extensively: Vicki Colvin, associate professor of chemistry;
Mark Wiesner, professor of civil and environmental engineering
and chemical engineering; Neal Lane, university professor;
Jennifer West, associate professor in bioengineering and

CNN
A story discussed the difficulty business school graduates
are having in getting jobs. Gil Whitaker, dean of the Jesse
H. Jones Graduate School of Management, remarked that the
Jones School is trying to help its students by creating
opportunities.
