Alumni leadership conference set for Sept. 20-21

Identifying and
motivating alumni leaders to actively support the Rice University
is the purpose of the Conference for Rice Alumni Leaders
2002, which will be Sept. 20-21 at various locations on
the Rice campus.

“We want
to engage a broad community of alumni leaders who are effective
advocates for Rice and active supporters of the university
and who will help involve other alumni,” said Eric
Johnson, Rice’s vice president for resource development.

Conference participants
will receive an inside look at all facets of Rice, hearing
from and interacting with the university’s top leaders
on a variety of issues important to the university and learning
about opportunities to become involved in alumni activities
that help promote the university’s goals.

The conference
is the first of its kind at Rice and is cosponsored by the
Office of Development and the Association of Rice Alumni
(ARA). It fulfills one of the three major goals of the “Rice:
The Next Century Campaign”: to develop a volunteer-based
effort.
“The best advocates of a university are its alumni,
and Rice has the most enthusiastic alumni around,”
said ARA President Vicki Whamond Bretthauer ’79. “At
this conference, we want to encourage them to develop their
talents as advocates of the university on a broader scale.”
