Present: Bob
Patten (speaker), Ed Akin, Janet Braam, Steven Crowell,
Chandler Davidson, Bala Dharan, Deborah Harter, Tom Haskell,
Lynne Huffer, Caroline Levander, Seiichi Matsuda, Barbara
Ostdiek, Herb Ward, Jennifer West, Mark Wiesner and John
Zammito. Absent: Stephen Baker, André Droxler and
Gordon Mutchler.

(1) Minutes (May
7, 2002): The minutes were accepted as amended.

(2) Report, Review
of Faculty Council Accomplishments for 2001-2002 (Patten):
Patten reviewed the Council’s work.

(3) Election,
Faculty Council Speaker for 2002-2003 (Patten): Patten asked
for nominations for the Faculty Council Speaker. Zammito
was elected by acclamation. Zammito announced that Faculty
Council Committee appointments will be made within the next
week, and he asked the members to let him know on which
committee they would like to serve. He then described several
goals he would like the Council to pursue and some priorities
that need to be established.

(4) Election,
Council Members (Patten/Baker/Akin):
A. “Professor at Large” position on Faculty Council
and on University Council, replacement for Ambler (Patten):
Patten stated that Chandler Davidson has been appointed
to the “professor at large” position, which was
vacated by John Ambler.
B. Four Council positions to be vacated in the fall of 2002
(Zammito): Zammito stated that he will meet with Baker to
initiate a plan to fill the four positions for “assistant
professor” on the Faculty Council.
C. Election schedule (Akin): This matter will be further
discussed during the Council’s September meetings.

(5) Proposals,
Promotions and Tenure Committee (Akin): Discussion of promotions
and tenure — proposed changes.

(6) Update, Wording
on Honorary Titles Policy (Akin): Akin stated that he will
provide the Council with the revised “honorary titles”
document for vote during the next Council meeting, Sept.
10.

(7) Report, Committee
on Compensation (Dharan): Dharan stated that he is revising
his report and will forward it to the Council within the
next few weeks.

(8) Schedule,
Faculty Council Business Meetings for 2002-2003 (speaker):
The following is the schedule for the next four Council
meetings:
Tuesday, Sept. 10, noon, Esther M. Cohen Room, Cohen House

Tuesday, Sept. 24, noon, Esther M. Cohen Room, Cohen House
Tuesday, Oct. 22, noon, Esther M. Cohen Room, Cohen House

Tuesday, Nov. 12, noon, Esther M. Cohen Room, Cohen House

(9) New Business,
Undergraduate Degree Requirements: The Council agreed to
discuss this matter in the September meetings.

(10) Adjournment:
The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m., and the next meeting
is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, noon, Esther M. Cohen
Dining Room, Cohen House.
