‘Handoff’ harvests tasty entries, generous donations

…………………………………………………………………

Farnsworth Pavilion
was filled with the aroma of freshly baked treats last week
as Rice employees vied for top honors in the third annual
Harvest Handoff and Baking Contest.
Prizes were awarded for the top two entries in the categories
of cakes, pies, cookies/brownies and breads/muffins, and
a prize was given for the overall best-of-show. Employees
who donated nonperishable food or cash had a chance to taste
the entries and decide if they agreed with the judges’ decisions.

Winning best
of show was Pat Kambhu, Delivery Services, and Diane McMaster,
Development. The first- and second-place winners in the
other categories were:

Cakes: Jo Gerla, biochemistry, and Charlet Reedstrom, electrical
and computer engineering

Pies: Susan Massey,
graduate studies, and Patty Ciampi, controllers office
Cookies and brownies: Stacey Martin and Jana Starr, both

Breads and muffins: Christie Johnson, Shepherd School of
Music, and Barbara Braun, physics

The Employee
Activities Committee, which sponsored the event, collected
$170 and more than eight boxes of food to donate to the
Salvation Army.

Judging the event
were Richard Barnhouse, recreation center; Pat Burgess,
Journal of Southern History; Marian Harris, facilities and
engineering; Siva Kumari, School of Continuing Studies;
Tommy LaVergne, public affairs; Bill Parsons, religious
studies; Tim Pitts, information technology; Wayne Robinson,
development; Terry Shepard, public affairs; Doug Tomlinson,
facilities and engineering; Shisha Van Horn, educational
technology.

The Employee
Activities Committee, a subcommittee of the Staff Advisory
Committee, coordinates and plans campus activities in the
effort to foster relationships among all employees.
