Fulfill New Year’s resolutions through School of Continuing
Studies

…………………………………………………………………

Many people are
entering 2003 with a resolution to learn something new.
Perhaps it’s to learn a language, learn to draw, brush
up on history or finally tackle the software program that’s
supposed to make one’s job easier. The School of Continuing
Studies offers Rice faculty, staff and their immediate family
members the opportunity to take such courses, with most
discounted 25 to 50 percent.

Beginning in
late January, Continuing Studies is offering courses in
arts, science, humanities, information technology, foreign
languages and personal and professional development. Course
descriptions, dates, fees and registration are available
online at <www.scs.rice.edu>. Most spring courses
are held in the evenings or on Saturdays.

Some highlights
of the spring schedule:

• “Cultures
of Creativity: The Centennial Exhibition of the Nobel Prize,”
Tuesdays beginning Feb. 4. In this companion course to the
exhibit opening this spring at the Houston Museum of Natural
Science, participants will examine the creative processes
and milieus of selected Nobel laureates. Lecturers include
three Nobel Laureates, the director of the Nobel Museum
in Stockholm, and Rice President Malcolm Gillis. Fee for
Rice faculty and staff: $77.50.

• “Life
Lessons: A Psychologist’s Observations on Living,”
Mondays beginning Feb. 10. Roberta Diddel, a lecturer in
the Department of Psychology, will share insights from 20
years in psychology practice on what she deems to be life’s
greatest issues: personal growth, the nature of suffering,
the meaning of life, spirituality, relationships, personal
choice and responsibility and more. Fee for Rice faculty
and staff: $67.50.

• “The
Thousand-Year Legacy of the Byzantine Empire,” Tuesdays
beginning February 11. Michael Decker, the Andrew W. Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for the Study of Cultures
at Rice, will explore the culture and turbulent history
of the Byzantine Empire from its founding in the fourth
century to its fall in 1453. Fee for Rice faculty and staff:
$67.50.

• Foreign
Language Instruction. Beginning January 21, courses meet
twice a week to study Spanish, French, Italian, German,
Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese or Russian. Small classes
are offered at all levels of proficiency. Ten-week sessions
are $320 for Rice faculty and staff.

• “Introduction
to Microsoft Project 2000” This course begins March
12 and will teach participants to use the popular project-management
program to define tasks, schedule milestones and assign
personnel and financial resources necessary to implement
a project. Fee for Rice faculty and staff: $373.50. (Job-related
courses may qualify for 75 percent tuition reimbursement
under Human Resources Policy No. 432-98. Supervisor’s
prior approval is required.)

• “You,
Too, Can Draw!,” Tuesdays beginning Feb. 11. Embark
on a journey to find the artist within. Instructor Stanley
Kaminski will help beginning students gain confidence and
