Rice tuition rises slightly but remains affordable

Tuition for the 2003-2004 academic year at Rice University will range from $17,150 for seniors to $18,850 for freshmen, based on the university’s policy that returning-student tuition will rise no more than the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The new rates were approved by the Rice Board of Trustees at its December meeting.
Rice tuition is only two-thirds that of other leading private universities because the university uses its endowment — the fifth largest per student among American universities — to keep tuition lower.
Based on last year’s 2.4 percent rise in CPI, tuition rates for returning students will be as follows:
