A
news item announced that Elizabeth Long, associate professor
of sociology, was named Texas Professor of the Year by the
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and
the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
An article discussed
the likely passage of legislation to increase federal funding
for nanotechnology, adding that the bill would benefit Rice
as well as other Texas universities. Kristen Kulinowski,
executive director of the Center for Biological and Environmental
Nanotechnology, commented, Its a huge endorsement.
Rice was identified as one of a handful of top universities
in nanotechnology research.

An article that featured James A. Baker III mentioned that
his grandfather, Captain James Addison Baker,
had been instrumental in saving the bequest made by William
Marsh Rice to fund Rice University. Bakers involvement
with the Baker Institute, of which he is honorary chair,
was discussed.

Randall Hulet, the Fayez Sarofim Professor of Physics and
Astronomy, was quoted extensively in an article about the
creation of a Bose-Einstein condensate out of fermions rather
than the usual bosons.

David Medina, director of minority community affairs and
senior editor of Sallyport, was quoted in an article that
discussed differences in the terms Hispanic, Latino and
Mexican-American. Medina said that he is fine with the word
Hispanic, but would rather be described as Mexican-American.
