Christian
Emden
, assistant professor of German, was one of the
coordinators of an international research group on “Cultural
History and Literary Imagination,” which is based at
Cambridge University in England. In the context of this
group, he organized and chaired an international workshop
on “The City and the Imagination,” bringing together
literary scholars, geographers, historians and anthropologists,
in Cambridge July 30. Emden will also give a paper titled
“Epistemic Constellations: Intellectual History, Cultural
Studies and the Sociology of Knowledge” in May at St.
John’s College in Cambridge, England.

Bruce Etnyre,
professor of kinesiology, presented “Frontal Plane
Segmental Motion of the Spine During Varied Running Speeds
in Middle Distance Runners” at the American College
of Sports Medicine in San Francisco, Calif., May 30. Etnyre
presented “Effects on Limb Positioning Accuracy in
a Horizontal Plane Following a Maximum Isometric Contraction”
Nov. 10 at the 33rd annual conference of the Society for
Neuroscience in New Orleans.

Siva Kumari,
assistant dean and director of programs at Rice’s School
of Continuing Studies, presented an invited talk Nov. 19
at the annual conference of the Texas Association for the
Gifted and Talented. Her talk was part of the training-and-assessment
session, part of the preconference on gifted students and
the Advanced Placement Program. Kumari discussed professional
development opportunities and projects, available through
Continuing Studies, for pre-AP and AP teachers in middle
and high schools, IB teachers and teachers of high school
gifted and talented students.
