Dariusz Skórczewski , lecturer in Slavic studies, presented his paper ”The Use of Web-based Technology in the Teaching of Central European Culture at Rice University” at the International Conference on New Directions in Humanities July 2-5 in Rhodes, Greece.
William Martin, the Harry and Hazel Chavanne Professor of Religion and Public Policy, spoke on the topic ”With God on Their Side: The Rise of the Religious Right in America” and participated in a panel Nov. 21 on ”The Influence of the Fundamentalism Far Right on U.S. Politics” at the Einstein Forum in Potsdam, Germany.

Hamid Naficy , the Nina J. Cullinan Professor of Art History, gave a talk about the representation of ethnoreligious minorities in media at a workshop at the American Academy of Religion in Atlanta Nov. 20. The talk was titled ”Identity Politics and Iranian Exile Music Videos.”

Associate Professor of Management Shannon Anderson ‘s paper ”Management Control for Market Transactions: The Relations Between Transaction Characteristics, Incomplete Contract Design and Subsequent Performance,” co-authored with Henri Dekker of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, was selected for presentation at the Annual Research Conference of the Management Accounting Section. In addition, Anderson has joined the editorial board of Productions and Operations Management (POMS) as a senior editor. POMS is a top journal in the field of operations management.

James Disch , associate professor of kinesiology, made a presentation Dec. 5 at the annual meeting of the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Galveston. The title of his presentation was ”Calculating Reliability Coefficients Using Excel.”

Steven W. Lewis , lecturer in Asian Studies and senior researcher in Asian politics and economics at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, was invited to present ”Some Bumps on the Road Between Tizhi and Zhidu” at a workshop Nov. 15-16. He also presented ”A Look at Advertisements in New Public Spaces in Globalizing Cities” at a workshop in Shanghai, Japan, Dec. 6-7.

A performance of the play on which Trish Rigdon , associate director of theater and lecturer of theater, served as assistant director received rave reviews in Boston. Rigdon was responsible for the tour here in the United States, which went to New Haven, Conn.; Columbus, Ohio; and Boston. Rigdon has been invited back for the season next summer as assistant director and production administrator and has planned all preproduction meetings. Rigdon was also the lighting designer for the City Dance Company’s concert at Rice.

David Schneider , professor of psychology, has published a new book titled ”The Psychology of Stereotyping.” The book was published by Guilford Press Oct. 27.
Betty Joseph, associate professor of English, has published a book titled ”Reading the East India Company, 1720-1840: Colonial Currencies of Gender.” The book was published by The University of Chicago Press Jan. 15.
