Construction to begin replacing the signs at each campus entrance is set to begin at the end of March.

As Phase I of the Rice Campus Wayfinding Project, the entrance signs will be renumbered and replaced, and temporary directional wood signs will be replaced along the Inner Loop and in the parking lots, according to David Rodd, senior project manager in Facilities, Engineering and Planning (FE&P).

“The goal is to better direct visitors into and around campus,” Rodd said. “This is the first step in a comprehensive plan to try to standardize the signage on campus and enhance its effectiveness.”

The renumbering of the entrances is in response to the Campus Master Plan Study to allow places in the numbering sequence to accommodate any new entrances that might be built in the future, Rodd said. The existing two entrances to the Greenbriar Annex parking lot will receive entrance numbers and signs. One existing entrance to the stadium parking lot will be numbered, but will be open only during heavily attended events at Rice Stadium.

The installation of the new signs should not impact traffic.

The entire phase of the Wayfinding Project will take several months, so the Rice community will be aware of the various changes as they happen. Jeff Cox, director of print and Web publications, said the online map will be current throughout the entire process. The publications department will receive updates from FE&P, and the online map will reflect any changes.

“We encourage people to direct guests and visitors to the online map throughout the entire process,” Cox said. “Since this will be an ongoing process for several months, the most current and up-to-date map will be online.”
