“I’m thrilled and honored to be returning to my alma mater as head coach,” Williams said. “[Former head coach] Cristy McKinney and her staff established a winning tradition in women’s basketball at Rice, and my goal will be to continue that tradition.”
Athletic Director Bobby May said Williams’ past experience made him an ideal candidate for the position. “Greg’s background as a Rice graduate with a solid coaching career in women’s basketball at the collegiate and professional levels makes him a special addition to our university,” he said. “We believe he has the energy, skill and experience necessary to take our women’s basketball program to even greater heights in Conference USA.”
Williams was a three-year letterman for the Owls basketball team under head coach Don Knodel from 1967 to 1969, earning all-Southwest Conference honors in 1969.
Williams replaces McKinney, who was named head coach at Clemson University in the spring.
