The space formerly occupied by Subway and the campus convenience store, now called “13th Street,” reopened for business at 4 p.m. Sept. 7.

After being closed for construction all summer, the store includes a deli, Smoothie King and grab-and-go coolers.
Associate Vice President for Housing and Dining Mark Ditman said the space has been designed to reduce the wait time customers experienced at Subway. The store has at least two cash registers open at all times to speed the process.

The grab-and-go options also decrease the time people spend waiting in line. Pre-made sandwiches, salads and sushi are available in coolers.

“The space [previously] didn’t have the level of throughput necessary,” he said. “We want to minimize wait time and add convenience.”

13th Street offers hot paninis, specially designed by several Rice chefs. Sandwiches are customizable with a variety of breads, cheeses and meats.

Smoothie King has moved from its previous location in Sammy’s. “Smoothie King wasn’t able to reach its potential [in Sammy’s] because of limited operating hours,” Ditman said. “People want smoothies at different times than they want lunch at Sammy’s.”

In the future, breakfast items could possibly be added as well. “We’re hoping to offer something for everyone,” he said. “We plan to constantly re-evaluate the offerings and make changes if necessary.”
