Law expert Olivas to give President’s Lecture Sept. 26

Michael Olivas, the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair of Law at the University of Houston (UH) Law Center, will speak at the first installment of the 2005-06 President’s Lecture Series.

Titled “The Effect of 9/11 Upon Higher Education Institutions,” the lecture will be at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center.

Olivas is the director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston. He is a leading expert on higher education law and has been a member of the prestigious American Law Institute since 1986.

Before joining the faculty at UH 23 years ago, Olivas held teaching and research positions at Ohio State University and Howard University. He also served as director of research for the League of United Latin American Citizens in Washington from 1979 to 1982.

During his tenure at UH, Olivas has received the Ethel M. Baker Faculty Award, the highest honor for UH faculty members. He was also the inaugural recipient of the Arthur K. Smith Leadership Award.

Olivas has been active in both local and national service organzations. He has chaired the boards of Arte Publico Press and the Public Interest Advocacy Center Scholarship Fund. Olivas was also a board member of the Craniofacial Foundation of Houston. Nationally, he has served as a trustee of the College Board and of The National Access Group Inc. Currently he is serving a term as a member of the executive board of the Association of American Law Schools.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center.
