Yildiz Bayazitoglu, the Harry S. Cameron Professor in Mechanical Engineering, received the American-Turkish Association’s 2005 Technical Achievement Award. The award was presented by the Houston Consul General of Turkey, Ambassador Atilla Uzer. Bayazitoglu also received the Daughters of Ataturk Award, which is given to “outstanding Turkish women who are shaping communities in the countries they live. Each recipient has made a commitment to the Turkish-American way of life.”

Dagobert Brito, the George Peterkin Professor of Political Economy, has been invited to become a corresponding member of the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, a nonprofit, nongovernmental association of distinguished members of the scientific community.

James Castañeda, professor of Spanish, delivered a paper titled “The Universality of the Quixotic” at the South Central Modern Language Association annual meeting.

Siva Kumari, associate dean of the School of Continuing Studies, chaired the 2005 planning committee for the annual meeting of the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Program of the National Science Foundation. She was an invited member of the panel “Sustaining NSDL Through its Projects.”

William B. Lee, professor of the practice of management and executive director for corporate education at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, participated in the second annual Esophageal Cancer and Metaplasia Research Summit in Las Vegas.

Sally Widener, assistant professor of management at the Jones School, presented a paper titled “Measuring Multiple Stakeholder Costs and Benefits for Improved Decision-Making,” co-authored with Marc Epstein, distinguished research professor of management at the Jones School, at the Third Conference on Performance Measurement and Management Control in Nice, France.

Jing Zhou, associate professor of management at the Jones School, was the keynote speaker at the Shell Asian-Pacific employee network group’s first learning conference in November. She spoke on “Globalization in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities for Asian-Pacific Employees.”

Ahmad Durrani, professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been invited by Houston Mayor Bill White to serve a two-year term as regional member on the “Mayor’s International Affairs and Development council/South Asis,” which is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and continued growth of Houston’s standing as a renowned international city.
