Concert to feature famed opera singer
The Shepherd School of Music will present famed mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade for a one-night-only recital program May 8 featuring works by Britten, Fauré and various American composers.
The recital, co-presented by the Houston Tuesday Musical Club, will be at 8 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall, Alice Pratt Brown Hall, with Shepherd School Opera Studies Director Richard Bado accompanying.
Since making her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in 1970, von Stade has performed on the stages of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls, including the San Francisco Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera.
In addition to stage work, von Stade has appeared on national television, including a performance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as part of the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics and with Sir Elton John, Andre Watts and the Philadelphia Orchestra at the opening of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. She also has made more than 70 recordings with every major label and garnered numerous honors and awards, including six Grammy nominations, two Grand Prix du Disc awards and the “Best of the Year” citations by Stereo Review and Opera News.
