Malcolm Gillis, the Ervin K. Zingler Professor of Economics and University Professor, took an extended speaking and service trip through East Asia in June. In North Korea, he met with presidents of universities in China and South Korea to discuss final preparations for the April 1, 2007 opening of the first private university in that country, the Pyongyang University for Science and Technology. Then he lectured about technology at Yanbin University in China. He chaired a session on international bond markets at the annual conference of the Central Bank of Korea and presented a paper on economic development at a summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, organized by Mikhail Gorbachev and Kim Dae Jung. As part of his duties as a director of the Vietnam Education Foundation, he spent a week in Vietnam, first in Hanoi, where he met with General Giap. Gillis also delivered a lecture on 21st century technologies in Ho Chi Minh City while reviewing activities of the Vietnam Education Foundation in that city.
