An article reported that Uzbekistan’s state oil company, Uzbekneftegaz, joined forces with state-owned oil companies in Asia and Russia. Amy Myers Jaffe, the Wallace S. Wilson Fellow in Energy Studies at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and associate director of the Rice Energy Program, commented, “National oil companies are expanding both at home and overseas. This is not the first time they have cooperated internationally and it won’t be the last.”

Fox News Channel
Paul Brace, the Clarence L. Carter Professor of Political Science, was interviewed about the potential use of the national security issue by Democratic candidates.

Houston Chronicle
In an article about the history of Houston’s Foley’s department store, John Boles, the William Pettus Hobby Professor of History and editor of the Journal of Southern History, said that the massive, virtually windowless air-conditioned store “seemed shockingly new at the time, almost science-fiction-like.”

The Seattle Times
An article featured a concert given by Shepherd School of Music faculty members Lynn Harell and Jon Kimura Parker at the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. Harrell is professor of cello and Parker is professor of piano.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A survey conducted by Michael Emerson of the attendance habits of 500 Christian congregations nationwide was quoted in an article about the decline of Sunday evening worship services. Emerson is the Allyn R. and Gladys M. Cline Professor of Sociology and director of Rice’s Center on Race, Religion and Urban Life.
