Author, activist to discuss ‘The Other Side of Israel’
FROM RICE NEWS STAFF REPORTS
Author and activist Susan Nathan will discuss her book “The Other Side of Israel: My Journey Across the Jewish-Arab Divide” at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 in Christ Church Cathedral’s Great Hall, 1117 Texas Ave.
Nathan will examine the history and present-day political and cultural currents that have created a situation little recognized in the ongoing debates about the future of Israel and the Middle East.
While living in Tel Aviv for four years, Nathan became concerned about the Israeli government’s discrimination against the Arab Israeli citizens. Against the advice of friends, in 2003 Nathan moved to the town of Tamra in northern Israel, where she lived as the only Jew in a town of 30,000 Arabs.
Her book describes the obstacles faced by the more than one million Arab citizens of Israel. Most recently, Nathan survived 30 days of rocket attacks by Hezbollah.
The lecture is sponsored by the Boniuk Center for Religious Tolerance at Rice University, Brigid’s Place and the Rothco Chapel.
Admission is free. R.S.V.P. by calling 713-590-3333. For more information, visit <www.boniukcenter.org>.
