An article reported that the growth of the population in the United States, which recently reached 300 million, is unusual among rich countries. Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology, commenting on the adage ”It takes a village to raise a child,” said that often in America, ”the church is the village.” Klineberg added that if church attendance is any guide, Americans are more devout than Europeans, and their faith colors their worldview.

An article reported on the creation of a single-pixel camera by Richard Baraniuk and Kevin Kelly at Rice. Baraniuk is the Victor E. Cameron Professor in Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Kelly is assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. Kelly was quoted extensively and his next project was described.
Houston Chronicle
An article featured the work done by Vicki Colvin and the center she directs, the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology (CBEN). Colvin is professor of chemistry and in chemical and biomolecular engineering. The article reported that CBEN ”probably does more research to assess the environmental and health risks of nanotechnology than any other [center] in the world.”
