Rice Cinema to screen professor’s films

Rice Cinema will screen two films by Associate Professor of Visual Arts Brian Huberman at 8 p.m. Nov. 17-19.

”Ray Hill’s Prison Show” offers a look at KPFT’s ”The Prison Show,” a radio program that has served the families of Texas convicts for 26 years, and the show’s founder, former convict Ray Hill.

In ”The Last Days of Charles/Kathryn,” Huberman follows Texas transsexual Charles/Kathryn McGuirre as he goes under the knife for a sex-change operation in London.

The films are part of ”At Work: At Play,” an exhibition of works by faculty of the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts.

Holiday shuttle hours

The Rice Shuttle Service will run its regular hours the week of Thanksgiving through

10 p.m. Nov. 22.

No shuttles will run Nov. 23 or 24. The Graduate Apartments Shopping Shuttle will operate from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25. Regular shuttle service will resume Monday, Nov. 27.

A shuttle running to Hobby Airport will be available Wednesday, Nov. 22, and Sunday, Nov. 26. At Rice, meet the bus in the circular drive outside Rice Memorial Center. Departure times Nov. 22 are 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 26, the shuttle will pick passengers up at Hobby Airport outside the baggage claim area at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Rice Players present ‘Into the Woods’ Nov. 16-18

The Rice Players present ”Into the Woods,” directed by Ben Burford ’06 Nov. 16-18.

The musical, which will be at 8 p.m. in  Hamman Hall, is based on the book by James Lapine and features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It intertwines a collection of uncensored versions of 18th-century Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

Admission is $10, $5 for Rice students and $8 for non-Rice students and senior citizens. For tickets call 713-348-PLAY.

Recreation Center extends its weekend hours

Due to popular demand, the Recreation Center has extended its hours on weekends, staying open until 10 p.m.

The Rec Center hours are 6 a.m.-midnight Mondays-Thursdays, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon-10 p.m. Sundays. The week of Thanksgiving, the Rec Center will close at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and will not reopen until Nov. 27.

Fondren holiday hours

Fondren Library will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, and will be closed Nov. 23 for Thanksgiving. The library will be open Friday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will resume its regular hours at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25.

No Rice News next week

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Rice News will not be published Nov. 23. The deadline for submissions for the Nov. 30 issue is Wednesday, Nov. 22.

Martin to examine church and state

William Martin, professor emeritus of religion and public policy and of sociology, will discuss ”God and We the People: Religion and Democracy in America” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30.

Martin, also the Harry and Hazel Chavanne Senior Fellow in Religion and Public Policy at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, will examine and reflect on the relationship between religion and government as intended by our forbears, as interpreted in the following 200 years and as it is being practiced today.

This is the second lecture in a five-part series on the separation of church and state and is sponsored by the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice and the Congregation Emanu El.

The lecture will be held at Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd.

Rice Readers tackle Larson novel

For its November book selection, Rice Readers is tackling ”Thunderstruck,” a novel by Erik Larson.

Larson’s best-seller intertwines the tale of two men — one the genius but discounted inventor of wireless communication and the other a notorious English murderer. Despite the brilliant scientist’s achievement, it will take a gruesome murder to bring notice to his amazing discovery.

Dance concert to be held

The Rice Dance Theatre is holding its fall concert, ”Excerpts from the Outside,” Nov. 16-17 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Autry Court.
