President’s holiday open house set for Dec. 7
The president’s annual holiday open house is set for Thursday, Dec. 7. Rice faculty and staff are invited to the Wiess President’s House between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to enjoy a taste of holiday cookies and refreshments and time with friends and colleagues.
Faculty Senate meeting Dec. 6
The Faculty Senate will meet Wednesday,
Dec. 6, in the Founder’s Room, Lovett Hall.
Meetings of the Faculty Senate are open to all members of the university community, but may be closed at the discretion of the Senate. Meetings are scheduled for noon to 2 p.m.
The meeting agenda will be posted on the Faculty Senate Web site, <www.professor.rice.edu/professor/faculty_senate.asp>, one week prior to the meeting. Dates of future Faculty Senate meetings also can be found there.
Ask the Expert: Robin Forman
Another ”Ask the Expert” session is slated for Wednesday, Dec. 6, where members of the Rice community can learn about the Rice undergraduate experience from the Dean of Undergraduates Robin Forman.
This informal question-and-answer session will be held in McMurtry Auditorium, Anne and Charles Duncan Hall, and will begin at 9 a.m., with refreshments served at 8:30 a.m.
Fondren Library celebrates renovations with open house
Fondren Library invites faculty, staff and students to an open house showcasing the newly renovated facility. The event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 1.
Citizens Police Academy taking applications
The Rice Police Department is taking applications for the next Citizens Police Academy, which will run from Jan. 16 through April 17.
Class will meet each Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m., except for the week of spring recess.
The Citizens Police Academy is designed to look into the daily and special-operation activities of a university law enforcement agency. There is no charge to attend.

Live videoconference Nov. 30 to mark World AIDS Day
Rice students will commemorate World AIDS Day with a live videoconference with students from Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines at 8 p.m. Nov. 30 in 102 Howard Keck Hall.
The videoconference to be held on the eve of World AIDS Day will give students an inside look into the AIDS pandemic and generate intercultural discussion about the role of the U.S. and other developed countries in stopping the spread of AIDS.
The event is free and open to the public.
Films showing at Rice Cinema
Rice Cinema will close out November and begin December with two films.
Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. will feature ”HB1403: The Story of Undocumented Students in Texas,” directed by Gabriel Lopez and Julita Rincon.
Dec. 1-3 and Dec. 8-10, Rice Cinema will screen ”A Scanner Darkly,” directed by Richard Linklater. Screen times are at 8 p.m. Dec. 1-3 and Dec. 8-10. Both Fridays also will include a 5 p.m. screening.
Admission to Rice Cinema is $6.
Panel to examine AIDS crisis
A discussion of the AIDS crisis will be the focus of ”Conspiracy of Silence: HIV/AIDS in the Black Community.” The event will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 2 in Grand Hall, Rice Memorial Center. Lunch will be provided.
The event will include three panel discussions of the crisis from different perspectives, with panel members from Rice, AIDS Foundation Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, among others.
Sponsors of the event are the Black Student Association, NAACP, MAPS and corporate sponsor bp.
