Rice University’s Jarett Dillard pulls down a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to seal a 31-27 victory over Southern Methodist University in a Nov. 25 game that clinched the Owls’ first bowl bid since 1961. The Owls have had a remarkable season just one year after finishing 1-10. Under the direction of rookie head coach Todd Graham, the Owls turned an 0-4 start into a 7-5 finish by winning six in a row — the team’s longest winning streak since 1949. ”I’ve won a lot of football games at a lot of places, but there’s something special going on at Rice right now,” Graham said. ”Forty-five years is way too long. We’ve just begun.” The Owls will represent Conference USA in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Dec. 22. |
