Jones School to serve as lead academic sponsor for National Society of Hispanic MBAs

Special to the Rice News

Rice University’s Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management will be the first ever lead academic sponsor for the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) 18th Annual Conference and Career Expo happening October 4-6 in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The conference entitled ”Leading With Influence” will provide MBA students and business professionals from across the nation prominent access to professional development seminars and networking events.

”Rice University and the Jones Graduate School of Management are proud to be the first academic sponsor and lead supporter of NSHMBA’s national conference,” said William B. Glick, dean of the Jones Graduate School of Management.  ”The conference allows invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth in a highly charged learning environment.”

The event, which has grown every year, attracted a record of 6,700 attendees at last year’s national conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

NSHMBA, a nonprofit organization, was created to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development in order to improve society.  Since then, the organization has grown into 29 chapters and 6,000 members in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

In 1988, a group of Hispanic MBA students sought to remedy the lack of visibility of Hispanics within corporate management and the public sector and reverse Hispanic under-representation and declining enrollment in graduate business schools.

The Houston Chapter hopes to make an immediate impact on the development and visibility of Hispanic students, MBAs and professionals in Texas and beyond.   Over the next few years, the goals of NSHMBA are to:  increase the enrollment of Hispanics in graduate management programs; assist business organizations in the recruitment, development and promotion of Hispanic business professionals; and engage in networking and community events to provide Hispanic professionals with opportunities for career growth, leadership development and entrepreneurship.
